Bonus Content: Breaking out of TEEL
Overview and General Information
These videos provide general advice on the new Study Design. The videos include an overview of the SD, a summary of differences between VCE English and EAL, a video on benchmarking and moderation process, and finally a student lecture for Y11 or Y10 Head Start students.
This video explores active reading, guided reading, close reading, and inferential reading. I also discuss the importance of Making Connections in all areas of study.
U3/U4: Reading and Responding to Texts
This video explores Units 3 and 4 Reading and Responding to Texts. It looks at the differences between the previous study design and the new Areas of Study, which point towards Section A of the exam.
U3 Creating Texts
This video explores Unit 3 Outcome 2: Creating Texts. It takes a look at the assessment, key knowledge, and some advice on how to structure the unit.
U4 Analysing Argument
This video explores Analysing Argument – nothing to be worried about here! If you’ve taught this Area of Study in past study designs, is basically the same with a few nuances in the Key Knowledge. In this video, I talk about the major changes which are to the written and oral assessment tasks.
Reading and Exploring Texts
Summary of Changes
This video provides a summary of changes between the previous Reading and Creating outcome and the new Reading and Exploring outcomes for Units 1 and 2.
Unit 1 Area of Study 1 (Personal Response)
This video provides a detailed discussion of the first Outcome in Unit 1. It includes a screencast of my discussion of the unit of work and assessment criteria which can also be downloaded below.
The following unit plan and assessment task serve as general examples of how I would approach these Units. I have drawn on the VCAA Advice for Teachers, but the assessment rubric is my own creation based on the Key Skills and is not from the VCAA. The unit plan is deliberately broad so that it can be applied to any text or film study.
Crafting Texts
These videos explore the most significant change to the new Study Design: Crafting and Creating Texts. The first video provides an overview of the new outcomes. The second provides a detailed discussion of the assessment tasks. The third video is a discussion of how to select an idea and relevant mentor texts to support the Crafting and Creating text units.
This video explains how the writing cycle can be used with Crafting and Creating Texts to encourage students to explore both the process and product of writing.
Exploring Argument
This video provides a summary of the differences between the new Exploring Argument outcome and the previous Study Design and goes into some detail on where the orals are now situated, and the expectations of the assessment for English and EAL students.
