Coming soon: Practical AI Strategies Online Course

Practical AI Strategies was released in January and has received great reviews from educators in Australia, the US, UK, Europe, South East Asia, and across the world. Over the past couple of months, I have been working on an online course to accompany the book, and it is almost ready to launch.

In this post, I’ll be showing a few of the elements of the course. I’d also like to thank the team of testers – all from K-12 and Higher Education – who have been diligently providing feedback throughout the process. It is really important to me that the course is helpful, easy to follow, and of course, practical.

Course structure

The course follows the structure of the book, and is split into six modules plus an introduction and conclusion. The modules are:

  1. What is GenAI?
  2. Teaching AI Ethics
  3. Assessment and Education Guidelines
  4. Practical Strategies for AI Prompts
  5. Practical Strategies for Image Generation
  6. The (Near) Future of GenAI

Each module features a welcome video which provides an introduction to the module content and some extra information about the topic, here’s an example:

The welcome videos are followed by the main content, which includes between 2-4 videos on the topic of the module. Because I know how difficult it is for educators to find the time and space for professional learning, these videos are all between 10-20 minutes and encourage you to move through at a pace which suits your work.

In the module videos, you’ll find discussions of the materials from the book as well as a lot more in-depth coverage of Generative Artificial Intelligence – everything that didn’t fit into Practical AI Strategies, or which benefits from a more detailed demonstration. The videos also include screen recordings of various GenAI applications and techniques for using the technology.

Building the course

The course is the culmination of over 18 months of work with educators in K-12 and Higher Education, and my own ongoing PhD studies. My team of testers – who each received a copy of the book as well as access to the course – has been incredibly valuable in making sure the content is clear, relevant, and well-presented. We’ve fixed up a number of issues along the way (including issues with my microphone, and mysterious blank video sections!), and the finished course is looking great. Here are a few comments from the testers along the way:

I think that AI can feel so large and daunting, and that may be why many of my colleagues are reluctant to dive into it, because let’s be honest, they already have a ton on their plates. I think this module would be useful for educators who are new to the world of GenAI to find their footing and have a chance to test out different platforms

Tester feedback

Before this module and reading your book, when I thought about ethics in GenAI, my mind went only to how we use GenAI responsibly in terms of originality (whatever that means) and integrity in the classroom. I also thought this topic would focus on how do we teach students how to use it ethically/responsibly as well. What I loved is how you went into depth into areas I previously hadn’t given a single thought to – primarily the environmental impact and the human labour impact.

Tester feedback

The module is a fantastic guideline on its own for many to structure the benefits and challenges of GenAI. This is not only an assessment module, but more of a societal perspective that diverse group of professionals can adapt to their contexts. For me, it can be useful in many ways for example: 1. I knew Unesco Guidelines, but I was impressed with “Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools” and also VINE School GAI guidelines, they can be great examples to discuss and design the guidelines that we might create for our institution.
