Since 2019 I’ve been writing about writing on this blog. In July 2022, after applying for my PhD, I began writing about writing with AI. Those early articles reflected on “paragraph spinners” and “automated writing technologies”: the precursors to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. I experimented with applications like WriteSonic and Jasper, which used GPT-2 and GPT-3 based language models from the – at the time – open source applications emerging from OpenAI.
Then, in November 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public. With the upgraded GPT-3.5 language model, ChatGPT was much more competent that those earlier applications at producing human-like writing. This blog has continued to be an important space for reflecting on those advances.
I have compiled a new free eBook based on my articles about AI Writing, from 2022-2025. Teaching AI Writing includes 29 articles that cover everything from the philosophical concerns of using AI to write through to practical teaching methods. The book also charts how reactions to AI writing have changed over time, and how the education sector has responded.
