New Online Course: The Practical AI Process

I’m excited to announce a new course on my platform at Practical AI Strategies. The Practical AI Process is a complete course with over four hours of content, split into accessible < 10 minute lessons and spanning Foundation to Advanced level use of GenAI. It builds on my earlier courses and focuses exclusively on how educators can make practical use of any GenAI platform currently on the market.

In this post, I’ll run through some of the features of the course and the intent behind The Practical AI Process.

Why “Process”?

In a couple of recent posts, I explained why, after several years working with these technologies, I think that processes are more important than prompts. Your can check out those two posts here:

In a nutshell, since 2023 we’ve seen significant improvements in most forms of multimodal GenAI: text, image, audio, and video. These improvements have made it less important craft the “perfect prompt”, and it’s now much easier to achieve a good outcome simply by choosing the right type of application for the job and understanding a few key processes.

Core Ideas for the New Course

As well as the idea of Process > Prompts, there are a few core principles underpinning this new course. These principles steered my design of the course, and were informed by feedback from thousands of educators worldwide through my mailing list, surveys, and early access subscribers while the course was under development.

  • Platform agnostic: I don’t care if you use ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or some open source LLM you’ve built in your shed. The processes apply across the board. I will sometimes show you which apps are best for what, but I’ll never need you to lock in on a particular product.
  • Future focused: We know that these technologies change every few weeks. My previous major course Practical AI Strategies, stayed up to date because I avoided specific time-bound apps (what is Bing chat?) and buzzwords (“prompt engineering”). This new course applies the same principle and keeps one eye on the future of these technologies.
  • Independent: I make these courses myself, in my office at home (and watching way too many YouTube videos on three-point lighting and depth of field). The creation of new courses is supported by early access subscribers and the thousands of educators who have enrolled in my earlier courses. They’re not sponsored by tech companies, and they don’t come with any hidden agendas.
  • Honest and realistic: If something doesn’t work while I’m recording a demonstration, I usually leave it in and try to explain the error. While I speed up parts of videos and make edits, these are generally declared if they make the AI seem “better” than reality. The new course includes Follow Along videos for every level where you can work through a task at exactly the same pace as me, using the same products. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, we’ll explore why.

What You’ll Learn: The Five-Step Practical AI Process

The Practical AI Process is built around five core steps that work with any GenAI platform—whether you’re using ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or open-source alternatives:

  1. Apply Your Expertise – Learn how your professional knowledge shapes better AI interactions and outputs
  2. Select the Right Model – Understand which AI tools work best for different tasks (text, image, audio, video)
  3. Add Context – Master techniques for providing relevant materials and information to improve results
  4. Use Internet Connection – Leverage real-time data and research capabilities for accurate, current outputs
  5. Iterate and Refine – Develop processes for improving outputs through strategic revision

The course progresses from Foundation to Advanced levels across more than four hours of content, with lessons ranging from basic contextual prompting through to coding and working with local, open-source AI systems. Every lesson is designed to build confidence and help you avoid the overwhelm that many educators experience with AI platforms.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Confidence using multiple GenAI platforms without relying on “perfect prompts”
  • Practical workflows you can apply immediately to your teaching and administrative work
  • Understanding of how to choose the right AI tool for different educational tasks
  • Skills that remain relevant as AI technology continues to evolve

Who This Course Is For

The Practical AI Process is designed for educators at every stage of their AI journey:

  • New to GenAI? This course starts at foundation level, assuming no prior knowledge. You’ll learn what GenAI is, how it works, and how to use it practically.
  • Already experimenting with AI? Move beyond basic prompting to develop robust, repeatable processes that work across multiple multimodal GenAI platforms and produce consistently better results.
  • Leading AI implementation? Gain advanced skills including coding applications, working with open-source models, and understanding the future trajectory of these technologies.

The course is specifically tailored for:

  • K-12 and Higher Education teachers across all disciplines
  • Educational administrators and support staff
  • Curriculum leaders and instructional coaches
  • Anyone in education who wants practical, confidence-building AI skills

Because the course is platform agnostic, you can apply these processes whether your school uses Microsoft, Google, or any other AI ecosystem.

Hands-On Learning with Follow-Along Videos

One of the unique features of The Practical AI Process is the Follow-Along video included at every level: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

You’ll work through complete tasks in real-time, at exactly the same pace as the instructor, using the same tools and platforms you have access to. These follow-alongs include using GenAI to create resources, using Multimodal GenAI, and downloading and running local, offline and open source GenAI.

This real-time, realistic approach builds genuine confidence and was well-received by the educators who joined during early access. When you try these processes yourself, you’re working with realistic expectations, and you’ll be prepared when things don’t go perfectly on the first try.
