Description

In this digital PD I explore how Reading Strategies can be applied to media texts from traditional media to new media. I provide activities you can use in the classroom to discuss and deconstruct media texts, exploring bias, reader positioning, and fake news.

The 20 minute “mini-PD” also covers how Making Connections, Visualising, Inferring, and Questioning strategies can be applied to these texts to encourage students to become more critical consumers of media.

As well as a discussion of traditional and new media, this PD includes the following classroom activities:

  • Making connections: Social atom
  • How the media plays on our emotions: Case study
  • Agenda setting function theory: How the media tells us what to think about
  • Questioning: 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, question
  • Reflective reading
